The Bible ,they say,is for many years on the top of the list of selled books in the world.
Lots of writers wrote lots of books and tried to explain this phenomenon, how the Bible influenced through centuries the minds of people and what was it's contribution to the modern society we are living now.
We as atheists should have at least an idea of the contents of a book which is used as a heavy weapon against atheism.
I intend in a series of articles in the frame of this thread to expose in a very brief form some basic notions about the Bible with the hope that some "perplexed" members of the forum will benefit of it.
Let's begin with the fact that the very name of Bible is confused and that a lot of people understand by that name quiet different issues.
The Bible represents the basic holly scripture for Jews and Christians alike.
For the Christians the Bible consists of two books: the Old Testament and the New Testament known also under various names as Evangelion or Holly Gospel.
For the Jews the Bible contents essentially only the so called Old Testament.
Now the name of Old Testament may be more clearer for the Christians but is really confusing for the Jews.
I'll try io explain.
The old Testament is known in Hebrew under the name TANAKH (read the "a" as if accentuated), being the initials of three words: Thorah (the teaching),Nevyim (prophets),Ktuvym (scriptures).
The Torah consists of the so called Five books of Moses ,named in latin as Genesis ,Exodus Leviticus,Numeri and Deutronomus.
The five books describe the creation of the world by God and in continuation the history of "the sons of Israel"from it's very begining up to the conquering of the land of Canaan by them.
The book of Prophets consists of a number of books
each of them being apparently written by Prophets or describing their life ,between them well known names in the Christian faith as Issaya ,Ezekiel,Amos, and many others.
The third book of scriptures conssists of a book named Events of the Past (history) and some other books describing moral events in an epic description.
The Jews use the name of Thorah some time instead of the above described Old Testament adding supplementaty books which are commentaries of the TANAKH, named under a general name as TALMUD.
Now please pay attention ,what was a bit clear up now goes to be more confused because the Christian faith does not recognize the sanctity of the TALMUD whereas the Jews repell at all the New Testament.
