We can well imagine that since our species of "Homo Sapiens" was born in the savanahs of Africa some 60000 years ago people lived in communities. It was a survival necessity for them to gather in communities ,otherwise being exposed to the harshnesses of nature and falling as prey to beasts.
Only that living in community is not thinkable without a leadership and that leads to envy, hate. jealousy, subordination, tyranny, trahison as well as to other feelings of love-hate relatios between men.
We don't have any reason to think that the early man was in that regard much different from us to day.
All those intercommunity relations brought with them inevitable the killing of man by man-the homicide.
To that we may add for sure also the canniballism.
An other aspect of killing was the fighting between communities for the same sources of food or the same pieces of land.
As little communities evolved into nations or people with statehood
the fighting evolved in wars as we know them in our times.
Now killing of a man or of a group of men is for both sides ,for the killer as wel as for the killed a most shaking event.
The killer has to mobilize his maximum skills in order not to be killed and in the wake of that fight the early man perhaps discovered one day that there is a supranatural power which he can mobilize to his help.
It didn't matter that this force existed only in his imagination, the very belief in it's existence gave him a surplus of power in order to win.
Those are one of the many causes which gave birth to belief in Gods.
A proof to it is that most of ancient mythologies we know are abunding with tales of fights and killings between Gods in Heavens, this being a reflection of relations between humans on earth.
Very much has not change in that regard even if the plularistic belief in Gods has be substituted in out times by the belief in one invisible God.
A classic example of it would be the First World War.
The WWI errupted not only as a result of colonialistic interests and stupid blunder of governments ,kings and emperors but also as a result of deep streaming hate between nations.
For the English the Germans were Huns ,for the French the Germans were Boches(what ever it means) for the Germans the French were decadent frogeaters and so on and so on,,
The reciprocal killings by hundred of thousands was motivated, between others ,by a deep hatred between the fighting soldiers.
Now what is interesting for us as atheists is that all parties had the Christian churches on their side.
Russian priests blessed the soldiers in the name of Christ wheareas english or fench soldiers wre blessed by their priests in the name of the same Christ to be victorious and to kill the ennemy.
To day the Muslims believe in one universal God named Allah but the suicide bomber who cries before his imminent death "Allahu akhbar"
means "Allah is my God and I am going to meet him despite my ennemie's Gods who are are all fake and non existent".
