As Richard Dawkins pointed out, many elected officials would have had to lie about their beliefs in order to get elected in the first place. How many atheists do you see in power?
The word atheist is thrown around with some huge evil undertone.

I have been alienated from social groups at a school I went to when it was discovered that I found religion to be a sham. There was a time when I refused to stand for the Pledge to protest the war in Iraq. People automatically assumed it was because I was an "evil atheist", when the reasons were strictly political. Of course, I lived in the Bible Belt at the time as well.

I find it interesting how so many Christians act like they're being persecuted, when it's the other way around. They will badger us, belittle us, and alienate us for our logical observations. But once we fight back, we're "persecuting them".

Please share your personal experiences, and other evidence of discrimination because of the fact that you're an atheist.
I was trying to get with this perfect 10 smart chic,...then the topic of religion came up...

Bad luck man! I live in Australia, and religion has never gotten in my way, or very rarely atleast. No one realy cares about god in Australia.

Man I'm moving to Australia!! Im a londoner and even on the tube Christians are opressing. Has anyone else seen these http://www.JesusLambofGod.org posters?
You should move to scandinavia. There more then 70% of the population is atheists.
I heard it was more like 80%.

This is the addy of an article on my blog that is concerned with Atheist discrimination.
Taz i relate to what your saying in your article,

Because religion has been put on stage for us all our lives, we are taught that we must show it an inordinate ammount of respect and that religious beliefs (blind faith!) is somehow a virtue, it's built into our everyday lives...I mean i could actually be sacked from work for blasphemy!!

This ingrained idea of reverance toward religion is very difficult to overcome, but i believe it is well worth it, religion has gone uncontested for so long now, but we have a chance to stand up and question it and we should. I'm not saying we must attack religion, but it's about time it was open for fair intelectual criticism.

I realsie this is easier said than done because so many people feel "hemmed in" by religion and it's various followers and the need to fit in....but me?

well i don't care, i am what i am and hopefully people will accept me for it.

Sam
you guys would love it in Manchester. you get the occasional band of "come and worship with us" dudes on the street, but pretty much the entire population is atheist. I've never had a problem with discrimination based on religion, or lack of it, because there's too many atheists for them to be attacked, and people seem pretty christiantolerant.
