As Richard Dawkins pointed out, many elected officials would have had to lie about their beliefs in order to get elected in the first place. How many atheists do you see in power?
The word atheist is thrown around with some huge evil undertone.
I have been alienated from social groups at a school I went to when it was discovered that I found religion to be a sham. There was a time when I refused to stand for the Pledge to protest the war in Iraq. People automatically assumed it was because I was an "evil atheist", when the reasons were strictly political. Of course, I lived in the Bible Belt at the time as well.
I find it interesting how so many Christians act like they're being persecuted, when it's the other way around. They will badger us, belittle us, and alienate us for our logical observations. But once we fight back, we're "persecuting them".
