Hi my name is Mona, and I'm new to this forum. I'm fourteen years of age, so naturally I assume I'm the youngest member on this board. I've been raised in a Jehovah's Witness family. I was baptized two years ago, not really knowing what I was doing. I did it basically because everyone else was getting baptized and it just seemed like the right thing to do. Two years later I've found out I don't believe in the religion, and I doubt very much the existence of a god period. And so that is why I'm currently an Agnostic. I have a feeling I will become a full blown atheist down the line, once I'm able to rid myself of all doubts and of all those nagging questions inside of my brain.

And so that's why I'm here, hoping this place may aid me in my journey of discovery. I used to think I had the "truth" in the JW religion. Come to find out everyone thinks they have truth, in whatever religion they reside in. So hopefully I'll be able to find the right one someday.

Well that's all I'm going to say now.
I hope to make some good friends on here.

Ciao for now!
Mona
Hello Mona and welcome to this forum

I'm glad that you had the courage of your own convictions to decide to work out what the 'truth' is for yourself rather than simply believe what others tell you, no matter how well meaning.

I'd be the first to admit that I have very little idea why we are here and what it's all about. Maybe it doesn't matter, and if you live life to the full, helping others as you go along then who really cares?

Just read what other people say and don't be worried about responding and even telling them you think they're wrong. I frequently am!! Wink

Hello mona,

I've never been baptized since my farther is an atheist and a geologist. I was never religious and always had doubts. I was always someone who needed facts not hypothasis. I didn't want to believe, I wanted to know because believing had always left huge gaps!

I once asked my father at a young age - "Goes god exist" He replied "No one knows". I said "Surely someone would know! He said no.

There was just a huge empty gap. No knowledge to be had, No data, nothing to learn from, no meaning at all. Intill I saw science! God turned into an impossibility and I bacame and atheist then and there.

Religion is to simplistic, Theres no knowledge to be had, No data to find and study. So in my mind, life was meaningless. Science ment there was plenty to learn from since there was so much un-known. I love learning and religion could not provide that.

Science is all about learning and gaining knowledge about our surroundings and science made far more sense than religion could ever dream. Religion is just a simple - read a book and have instant knowledge which was falsy, contradictive and bloody.

You can see why I'm an atheist and a very strong one too.

Ace

Hi Mona, Glad to see you have beaten the upbringing of a theistic family and stood strong for what you believe.

Just a quick tip to help you define your belief a little better.

Agnostism and Gnostasim deal with what you know, or claim to know.

Atheism and Theism deal with what you believe.

These are two seperate things and are not mutually exclusive, you can be any combination of the 2 things:

Atheist Agnostic
Atheist Gnostic
Theist Agnostic
Theist Gnostic

You say you're Agnostic which really tells us that you dont know for sure, and its good to be able to admit you don't know one way or another.

However it doesn't tell us what you believe, if you lack belief in god then you're already an Atheist by definition. I hope this helps.

Hooray! Another person who understands the true meaning of agnosticism. Frosty I applaud you! Big Grin

I personally find most people who claim to be "agnostic" are actually apatheists, people who really don't care about belief or disbelief in gods. The other lot of people claiming to be "agnostic" usually turn out to be agnostic atheists all along.
People who dont care are atheists.

Theists are those who believe, everything else is atheism, whether you simply lack belief, you strongly disbelieve or you dont care either way.

There are a lot of people who misunderstand these terms, a lot of people in my experience seem to think that being agnostic is a substitute for atheism, when in fact it's nothing of the sort.

Repeat it with me everyone!
(a)theism deals with what you believe
(a)gnostasim deals with what you know or claim to know.
Repeat after me

Atheism deals with not believing in a god or gods.
Agnosticism deals with not knowing or ever being able to know if there is a god or gods.
I was an agnostic at your age.

Not because I had an opinion I just didn't care.
