One characteristic I have identified with Catholics and other people who believe in God is that they are in denial about their own mortality. The belief in god gives them immortality, in the sense the will live in spirit after death. I see religion and God primarily as death denial- people just don't want to deal with death realistically. Now this is further reinforced by how funerals are intertwined with religious ceremonies.
Is their a reason why the human mind feels the need to create spirits, myths and Gods?

If we are all liberal and decent people, I'm sure we believe that beliefs should not be forced on anyone and no one should be stopped from exercising thier beliefs.
So should schools teach children religion (bearing in mind the diverse religious backround of students) or evoloution (in the knowledge that they may offend people religious beliefs).
My belief is both should be taught, by people passionate towards them, all valid point should be presented and children encouraged to make thier own choice, allowing them to create thier own beliefs and ideas without over pressure from outside sources?
My favourite piece of nonsense from the (funda)mentalist American camp is the old quote "one nation under God" toted as a rallying cry against; jews, muslims, non-christian american and all other denominations and creeds that don't share thier beliefs but they so quickly forget the "where all men are created EQUAL".

It has been widley ascribed that the majority of the founding fathers where in fact atheist but added the references to GOD to keep with the zietgiest of the time and maintain support, i think in this respect they are probably turning in thier graves at the thought of this modern america.
One of my starting points when trying to make progress with a religous person is to ask why they focus so much on what their scripture states, without asking what the scripture actually is, and how it came togeather. One christian once said to me that the Bible is the word of god because it says it is. This statement alone is obvioulsy ludicrous because any book can state anything, it doesn't mean it's true. When I discovered that the statement this person referred to was in the new testament he didn't see the flaw in his point, i.e that, at the time the scriptures, that now form the new testament were being written, the only scriptural documents that were in existance at the time were only the older texts (now known as the old testament) so the quote provided could only, at that time, have been saying that the "old testament" scriptures are the work of god - it couldn't have referred to the new testamant because those documents didn't exist at that time.

1 - Because people are born into a particular religon/culture and so are raised simply following their parents/society beliefs, which then become ingrained.

2 - Because people find it difficult to accept that "this is all there is"

3- Because people are so amazed by the beauty of the world (including "how it all started") they believe it must have been created by a supreme being

4 - Because people are so down/weak/vulnerable in their life they need their religon to help them cope.

I'm working on a book at the moment about why people believe in gods (and other supernatural things) so I want to start by asking a reader to ask themselves where their belief originates. Can anyone think of any other geenral reasons why people do believe in god, because I don't think there are many more (but would appreciate any feedback)

The problem of the existence of god is often regarded as connected to the achievements of science.Has the science the possibility to explain everything of the nature? NO ..Here you are says the believer in god -the human mind is limited, following there exists a superhumain entity which knows all about nature because he has created it.Right?

Now, the problem is exactly the opposit of it.
Right ,the science does not know all about nature ,the human brain is a
changing link in the process of a universal evolution .

So who created god and, most important ..why??
The answer of it is more sure than any inexplicable problem of the science.

GOD IS A CREATION OF THE HUMAN MIND.
Man was not created by god in his image as the Bible says but just the opposit :god is a creation of man in the image of himself, generally in the image of human leaders:fathers, kings ,man of wars etc..
Those leaders have humanly characters:they are wise or vengefull,or full of mercy, they are demanding for praises ,for sacrifices, for obeyance etc...
But which what purpose where they created by man? The answer is complex ,but in one phrase one can say:AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR SURVIVAL.
I expect to get comments and I will elaborate latter on that suject

Hi I am a christian, I want to thank the forum moderator to allow me to talk.

Let me tell you the story from the beginning of creation till the end that so far has been revealed to me by God, in my limited capacity as a human being:

Let me put a hypothesis: God is love, powerful and knowledgeable beyond our understanding. At any point of the story if this hypothesis sound to be contradictory, please rebut me, I will answer if I know the answer.

1) In the beginning, we are created. We live close to God presence where we can freely talk to him. This is possible because at that time human is pure.
2) The first man, sin, by defying God, this sin is described as 'pride'
3) If man is a hollow balloon that is filled with love before the sin, it is now a balloon with some filled with love, some filled with pride.
4) Pride kills love (and vice versa) and since God is love, human and God cannot live as close again less human will cease to exist by the mere presence of God.
5) Why God does not prevent this sinning? Only God knows fully, but if I have to answer I think by the very definition of love, love guarantees free will. Hence God allows this to happen.
6) When the first man sin, the very nature of man has evolved. And this nature (of having pride) is passed down to all human generation except Jesus.
7) God wants to remove this pride from all of us and live close with us again. (love is forgiving).
8) All words that is spoken in the bible are true, in the sense that, it is really what the author of the bible are saying, in their limited capability as a sinner (of having pride).
9) Exception is Jesus, who is like a holy tunnel which one can glimpse God's true nature, a pencil which God's Words and intentions are being conveyed without any alteration.
10) What God says to human in different generations (e.g Abel time, Moses time, David times and our times) are changing. This is not because God is changing. This is because human understanding about God throughout the time is changing, and God only talks in the way that human at that time will understand. But what God really wants is always the same.
11) In the past God gives instruction to human as law of actions: Do not eat this food, circumcise at certain age, etc.
12) This has helped many people at that time to be humble and follow God again whole heartedly, and hence many are saved by this law.
13) The original sins (of pride) causes some people who follow this law to be proud. They do the law to be praised by others and is blinded to God's true nature and wish.
14) God has already foreseen this and send Jesus to perfect our understanding of God's true nature.
15) Only works of miracle can make people believe Jesus' Words, which is God's direct saying, and so miracles He did (not to show off). Most importantly, Jesus shows the example of Godly love: No fear, no pride, and willingness to sacrifice without exception.
16) Many people then understand God's true nature. God's commandments are no longer laws for our actions but laws governing our very own nature.
17) So now comes to our time (20-21st century), and don't be surprised: people still misunderstand God's nature.
18) People still treated religion and God as objects of their own pride.
19) Pride by its nature will create distrust and division among people. Hence Christians splits, many religions created, war started.
20) Those who don't understand the nature of God, will be judged. Those who understand and practice the nature of God will be forgiven. (I'm afraid to conclude that nothing in our skin can be in favour of us during the judgment day)
21) Only God knows what happen after we died, and I would agree that it's very hard for human to be of no pride at all. I heard there will be purgatory, this should be the time when our nature of pride is totally annihilated.
22) But in the end God's objective will be achieved: Human can live close to God again.
~The end~

So, you might ask, what is pride?
Pride is when you think you are holier than others.
Pride is when you think you are holy.
Pride is when you cannot forgive others.
Pride is when you do good, just so that others will praise you.
Pride is when you are afraid to do good, because others might accuse you of ulterior motive.
Pride is when you think by donating all your worldly possession to charity you will rightly belongs to heaven.

Humility is realizing that all human is just a speck of dust compared to God and only forgiveness of God can save us.

My description here can never perfectly describe Godly attributes, as I am also a man with sin. I guess we just have to try to experience it ourselves.

Humans are born to war. We live for war. Walk in to a playground and children arn't playing peace, they are going 'bang, bang'.
Even in latter life people watch boxing, football etc which are all mearly substitutes for war. At the slightest provocation we resourt to violence which is why I conclude humanity will always fight wars, it is in our blood, our reasons for war mearly change.
What do you think? Is war eternal?

Hello everyone!:D

I thought i'd introduce myself before I begin posting properly.

I'm 26 years old, live in the UK (near London) and have been a Christian since January this year.

I used to be an atheist (and quite a militant one too:rolleyes:) until I found God a few years ago. I have been on a spiritual journey for the last couple of years looking at a few different religions before I found Christ.

I want to assure you I am not any kind of fundamentalist or religious loon who is going to bombard you with 'repent, repent!' in every post but what I am hoping to do is be a sort of good-will ambassador from the Christian side of things. I notice there can be alot of hostility from atheists towards religious folk (and vice versa) but as a former member of your 'community' I feel I am well placed to help ease a little of the negative feelings that might be here. Plus I think it would be of benefit to some of you having a Christian (albiet a young one) here to ask questions of should you have any. I am very approachable and will try not to take offence:p

Jesus urged His followers to go out into the world and spread His words among the people we encounter. I know this is an online forum but its technically the same thing:D

Anyway thats it really, look forward to posting with you all soon

Hi I just want people's opinions from my experiences in richard dawkins chatroom.
For people that do not know, richard dawkins is the author of 'The God Delusion'.
I think that is the most incredible book ever, but that the chat doesn't live up to its standard.

I was on there once and a religious person was kicked off simply for the reason of being religious and saying why. I defended him and it all calmed down eventually and he came back.

But today, this happened again. Bearing in mind, the mod that did this had been calling someone a dick earlier.
The mod asked them a question and gave them 2 warnings for not answering. The person was called "fundie" and they did not know he was religious, but disliked the name. Fundie apologised as he had lag. Fundie was then kicked soon after he said he was a christian, apparently for abuse, while everyone was shouting abuse at him, and they received nothing. Also, Fundie was new and had no idea what was going on.

I said that it was unfair, to kick someone just for their religious beliefs. The mod said that they couln't be bothered to talk to a religious person because they didn't want a religious debate. I said that it wouldn't be a good reason to kick someone, just because of their beliefs. I was kicked, came back and asked why I was kicked. Another mod said for questioning a mod. I said ok, I was going to look for a different place where people were tolerated. I was kicked again.

I want to know 2 things then from you lot:
1. Do you think this was fair of the mods, or unfair?
2. Do you tolerate people's beliefs? That does not mean respect they do not deserve. It simply means, do you delete posts for someone questioning your beliefs? I don't want another find like that chat.
